The announcement was made at the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy in Berlin, attended by Federal Minister for Economic Affairs Katharina Reiche, Minister President of Lower Saxony Olaf Lis, MSC Cruises CEO Pierfrancesco Vago and Meyer Werft CEO Dr. Bernd Aikens.
Pierfrancesco Vago, CEO of MSC Cruises, said: “Meyer Werft's reputation, expertise and rich history make it a true icon of European shipbuilding. Together, we will create ships that redefine the cruise experience, while maintaining the craftsmanship that keeps Germany at the forefront of naval engineering. The New Frontier class will allow us to develop new and exclusive itineraries, offer exceptional guest service and introduce next-generation green technologies that will bring us closer to achieving our goal of zero emissions by 2050.”
Dr. Bernd Aikens, CEO of Meyer Werft, added: “This new order is an important milestone in Meyer Werft's 230-year history. We are delighted to welcome MSC Cruises as a new customer and strategic partner and are sincerely grateful for the trust they have placed in us. This long-term partnership with MSC Cruises ensures sustainable development and job security for many years to come. Today is a truly positive and significant day for everyone at Meyer Werft – both for our employees and for our partners.”
The order will secure thousands of jobs in Germany, particularly in Lower Saxony and Papenburg, where Meyer Werft is a key employer and supports the shipyard's extensive supplier network. Meyer Werft directly employs more than 3,200 people, and more than 20,000 jobs in the wider region are linked to its activities.
With delivery schedules extending into the 2030s, the agreement strengthens Papenburg's role as a strategic hub for global cruise shipbuilding and ensures the continuity of one of Europe's most advanced maritime manufacturing ecosystems.
In essence, MSC is simultaneously:
- developing World Class
- and simultaneously launching a new line of liners
It seems that MSC is really going all in, pledging its fleet for decades to come — amounts that even by industry standards look extremely aggressive.
